Ein Foto mit Bono, Edge, Adam und Larry? Ein Traum, der für viele Fans zeitnah in Erfüllung gehen könnte. Vorausgesetzt der Dublin City Council setzt seine Pläne in die Tat um. 

Aus der einsteigen Absichtserklärung ist inzwischen ein offizielles Projekt geworden, das konkret ausgestaltet wird. Unter der Aufsicht des 'Arts, Culture, Leisure and Recreation SPC'-Komitees soll der Auftrag voraussichtlich in einem Künstler-Wettbewerb ausgeschrieben werden. 

Dass Dublin seine Söhne und Töchter auf diese Weise ehrt ist keine Seltenheit. So gibt es in der Innenstadt bereits Oscar Wilde und Thin Lizzy als Skulptur zu bewundern, auch ein Foto neben dem übergroßen Kopf und einer Statue von Luke Kelly ist möglich. 

An welchem Ort U2 verewigt werden, entscheiden nach aktuellen Plänen nicht zuletzt die Fans. Ebenso wie andere U2 Fanseiten auf der ganzen Welt, erhielt U2tour.de eine offizielle Anfrage mit der Bitte, in absehbarer Zeit einen Link zu teilen, unter dem über den zukünftigen Standort der Statue abgestimmt werden soll. 

Welche Orte zur Auswahl stehen und wann die Abstimmung stattfinden soll, steht noch nicht fest. U2tour.de hat ja spontan Gefallen am Eingang zum St. Stephen Green gefunden. Wir sind, sicher ebenso wie Ihr, gespannt, wo die Band letztendlich tatsächlich verewigt wird. 

Reaktionen seitens der Band liegen offiziell bislang nicht vor. Die Realisierung des seit  nunmehr fünf Jahren geplante U2 Visitor Centre am Hanover Quay verzögert sich derweil weiter. Die ursprünglich erteilte Baugenehmigung ist im März dieses Jahres abgelaufen. Die neu errichtete Statue wird somit deutlich früher das Stadtbild zieren. Zum Aussehen des fertigen Werkes hat die Stadt nur wenige Vorgaben gemacht. So sollen Bono, Edge, Adam und Larry lebensgroß gestaltet werden und Bronze als Werkstoff ist vorgegeben. Ansonsten haben die Künstler freie Hand: "(...) band can be depicted at any point in their career, from their early beginnings to the present day." The current 'Dublin City Development Plan 2023-2030', Chapter 11 'Built Heritage and Culture' proposes the erection of a statue to honor U2's importance to the city. The bronze monument is to depict all four band members and is expected to be erected next year.

According to current plans, the fans will participate in the decision where U2 will be immortalized. Like other U2 fan sites around the world, U2tour.de received an official request asking them to share a link in the near future to vote on the future location of the statue. 

It is not yet known which locations will be in the selection and when the vote will take place. U2tour.de has spontaneously taken a liking to the entrance to St. Stephen Green. We are, just like you, curious to see where the band will actually be immortalized. 

There has been no official reaction from the band so far. Meanwhile, the realization of the U2 Visitor Centre at Hanover Quay, which has been planned for five years now, continues to be delayed. The planning permission originally granted expired in March of this year. The newly erected statue will therefore grace the cityscape much sooner. 

The city has only made a few specifications regarding the appearance of the finished work. Bono, Edge, Adam and Larry are to be sculpted life-size and bronze is the specified material. Otherwise, the artists have a free hand: "(...) band can be depicted at any point in their career, from their early beginnings to the present day."
