U2 News » DVD Shoot am 20./21. Juli in Mailand !!!

Lt. Willies Tagebuch so um 21.10Uhr

http://www.u2.com/tour/diary.php?diary_id=230&mode=view Auszug aus dem Diary: 10.07.2005 Paris Stade de France. Went to the venue uncharacteristically early for a second show day, as there's still a lot to decide about how we approach the Milan video shoot (even though it's barely a week and a half away). Hamish, the director, Allen, the TV lighting consultant, Bruce and I spent a good while talking through the proposals and walking the stage. It's a very particular skill to transfer the energy and aesthetic of a big show onto a small screen, but these guys are the experts so I have confidence that we will be able to make it work as well as we have in the past. The band came in and spent a couple of hours in their rehearsal room, which was again very commendable for a second show day. They are keen to work up some different songs and generally keep moving the show forward, with a view to committing it to celluloid, or hard drive, or whatever it is that hi-def goes to. U2.com-News: http://www.u2.com/news/index.php?mode=full&news_id=1654 'Italian Job' Italian fans get to be part of a film shoot at the San Siro in Milan tonight and tomorrow. Director Hamish Hamilton, who shot the live DVD releases from Boston and Slane Castle on the Elevation tour, is back with the band in Milan tonight. Hamilton, working with U2's longtime video producer Ned O'Hanlon, will be shooting both shows in Milan for a future DVD release. (He also directed the film shoot in Chicago earlier on this tour. No information on release plans as yet.) 'One of the main reasons for coming to Milan is the Italian audience,' O'Hanlon told U2.Com. 'Italian U2 fans are among the noisiest and most passionate U2 fans anywhere in the world. We're expecting that they'll lift the roof of the stadium tonight!' And then there's the stadium itself: 'The San Siro is an incredible place, it's just so dramatic from a filming point of view.' U2's Show Designer Willie Williams has been recording the preparations for the video shoot in his U2.Com Road Journals over the last few days. 'We got cameras up and running and as evening came we began to see how the camera pictures were looking,' he writes in last night's extract. 'The roof of the building is a massive steel construction that looks like an extension of our steel back wall video screen. When the big lights came on it looked like the missing scene from Alien Resurrection. One small element in particular is going to give the video pictures a really special feel....' Willies Diary: http://www.u2.com/tour/diary.php?diary_id=232&mode=view 19.07.2005 Milan Managed to get out for an hour this morning to have a prod round the neighbourhood of the Duomo, La Scala et al. Its an absolutely scorching day, not a cloud in the sky after last night’s downpour. Down at the stadium the tour production was in full set up mode. The storm apparently visited Zurich last night too and gave the touring production a good dousing during load out. I spent a while building a new video sequence for Miracle Drug which I was very happy with. I felt like that song was (visually) never quite finished in the outdoor show, until now. The light this evening was entirely different to last night. Yesterday’s clouds were gone so we found that the light stayed 20 minutes or more longer than it had previously. Consequently we’ve pushed onstage time back to 9.10pm, as tomorrow’s weather forecast is about the same as today. We got cameras up and running and as evening came we began to see how the camera pictures were looking. It was very promising indeed. The roof of the building is a massive steel construction that looks like an extension of our steel back wall video screen. When the big lights came on it looked like the missing scene from Alien Resurrection. One small element in particular is going to give the video pictures a really special feel. We have ringed the stadium with small red ‘bulkhead’ lights – just regular 100w lightbulbs – and also edged the b-stage ramps with them. En masse on camera they make up a whole universe of red dots which will be in the background pretty much the whole time, helping to define the space. Its such a tiny thing, but will make a huge difference. We stayed late programming, 3am, 4am rolled by and it was still 29 degrees. We’ll be tired tomorrow, but this is going to look really good.
