Wie schon heute angekündigt, gibt es nun das versprochene (P)Review für das neue U2-Album 'The Best Of 1990-2000'. Die Diskussionen über die Tracklist ist ja ein eigenes Thema an sich und wurde wohl auch schon in den diversen Foren ausdiskutiert, wir wollen uns daher rein den Tracks auf dem Album widmen. Zu Beginn des (P)Review stehen die Songs, welche im Text und Abmischung zu den Alben nicht geändert wurden. Dabei handelt es sich um die Songs 'Even Better Than The Real Thing', 'One', 'Until The End Of The World' aus dem Album 'Achtung Baby' von 1991. Von Zooropa aus dem Jahre 1993 stammen 'Stay (Faraway, So Close!)' und 'The First Time'. Als weitere unveränderte Tracks haben 'Beautiful Day' und 'Stuck In A Moment' aus dem Album 'All That You Can't Leave Behind' (2000) den Weg auf die Compilation gefunden. Doch selbst an diesen scheinbar unveränderten Songs wurde gearbeitet. Die digitale Tontechnik hat sich in den letzten Jahren so geändert, dass selbst diese Songs wesentlich frischer und besser klingen! Infos: Neue Tracks (bisher auf keinen anderen Album/Single) Infos: Überarbeitete Tracks im Überblick Hier eine Auflistung der Songs die nachträglich verändert wurden: Mysterious Ways (Achtung Baby/1991): Der erste Song, der eine Änderung wiederfahren hat, ist Track Nr. 2 'Mysterious Ways'. Beim erstern Hinhören entspricht diese Version der auf dem Album, doch wurde hier eine Zeile getauscht: Bei ca. 1:35 min wurde aus der Textzeile 'She's the wave, she turns the tide, she sees the man inside the child' die neue Zeile 'She's the wave, she'll turn the tide, and no question, she knows why.' Als erster Gedanke kommt uns in den Sinn, dass diese Stelle auf Grund der Heirat von Edge und Morleigh geändert wurde, immerhin ist es ihr Song. Miss Sarajevo (Original Soundtracks 1/1995): Als nächstes finden wir einen augenscheinlichen Unterschied in der Version von 'Miss Sarajevo': Die Tracklänge. Die neue Version ist kürzer als die Version, welche sich auf dem Passengers-Album 'Original Soundtracks 1' von 1995 befindet. Doch nach genauem Hinhören stellt sich heraus, dass keine Textstellen geändert wurden, sondern lediglich Instrumentalteile gekürzt wurden. So geschehen bei 2:30 und dem Ende des Songs, welcher schneller ausgeblendet wird. Der Song ist somit mit 04:32 min um ca. 90 sec kürzer als die Version auf den Album. Gone (Pop/1997): Langsam nähern wir uns den Songs, an welchen grössere 'Umbauten' gemacht wurden, so an dem Track 'Gone' aus dem Album 'Pop' von 1997. Diesmal präsentiert sich der Song in etwas trashiger Abmischung. Bono's Gitarre steht mehr in Vordergrund und die Drums haben viel mehr Raum und klingen im übrigens auch sehr nah. Beachtlich ist dabei die ungeheure Transparenz der Aufnahme. Im Vergleich zur 97iger Version ist der Unterschied gravierend. Man hört Instrumente, welche zuvor nur vermatscht erahnbar waren. Und Bono's Gretsch kommt hier noch besser rüber als live. Der Song ist nur unwesentlich (8 sec) länger als die Version auf 'Pop'. Discotheque (Pop/1997): Auch der Song 'Discotheque' präsentiert sich neu und ist wohl der Song mit den gravierenstem Unterschied zum Original. Angelehnt an die Live-Version findet man aber auch hier eine ungeheure Transparenz und eine besser Betonung des Grooves mittels Shaker-Clicks. Auffällig ist auch die klare Akzentuierung des Grooves durch Edge's Gitarre. Speziell in der Bridge ist diese deutlich fetter abgemischt. Ob diese auf den Produzenten zurückzuführen ist, oder schlicht einfach nur auf die neuen Möglichkeiten der Studiotechnik (24Bit-Qualität) bleibt im Bereich der Spekulationen. Völlig neu beim Song ist zum einen das Intro sowie das Ende des Songs. Der komplette "Boom-Cha" Teil am Ende des Songs wie er auf 'Pop' zu hören war ist verschwunden. Weiters sind beiden von Bono gesungenen "Love" Übergange auf dem neuen Mix nicht mehr zu hören. Der Song ist somit mit 04:42 min auch etwas kürzer als die Album (Pop) Version. Staring at the Sun (Pop/1997): Ein weiterer deutlich überarbeiter Song ist 'Staring at the Sun' des 1997er 'Pop' Album. Auch hier finden sich wiederum erhebliche Live-Einflüsse beim Song-Arrangement. So wurde Edge's Stimme weiter nach vorne gemischt. Der wohl für "cool" gedachte Drumloop nervt allerdings mehr und läßt den Song leicht einschlafend wirken. Insgesamt erinnert es sehr an die Remixes und B-Sides des Pop-Albums. Teilweise witzig, aber irgendwie unhörbar. Die Lyrics blieben bei diesem Song unverändert. Der Song ist jedoch mit 04:49 min etwas länger als die Album (Pop) Version. Numb (Zooropa/1993): Auch an diesem Song wurden ein paar Änderungen im Mix vorgenommen. Bisher konnten wir noch keine groben Änderungen im Text raushören, jedoch hat sich hier im Refrain eine neue Backgroundstimme eingeschlichen. Das sanfte "I feel Numb" von der 'Fat Lady' (wie sie im Textbook genannt wird, natürlich ist das Bono) wird hier durch ein starkes und tiefes "I Feel Numb" unterstützt. Beim ersten Anhören dachten wir da eher an jemanden von uns, der da falsch mitsingt, doch das kommt wirklich von der CD! Das wiederholt sich dann über den Rest des Songs und kann von uns eigentlich nur als störend eingestuft werden. Sonst ist der Song bis auf die neue Klarheit wie bei allen Songs nicht verändert worden. Hier ein paar Infos zu den neuen Songs: Electrical Storm (Best of 1990-2000/2002): Wohl ein absoluter Ohrwurm mit passenden Steigungen im Gesamtbild. Der Ohrwurm-Charakter geht aber - im Unterschied zu vielen anderen U2-Songs - diesmal von der Gesangslinie und nicht von den Gitarrenriffs aus. Äußerst selten an dieser Stelle ist der Refrain mit einer Gitarre ohne Delay. Dafür stehen die Syntheziserspuren viel mehr im Vordergrund. Insgesamt gesehen eine schöne Umsetzung. Ein Song der sich wohl auch in den Charts durchsetzen kann. Die Version von "Electrical Storm" der A-Seite des Best Of Album ist ein Mix von William Orbit. William Orbit arbeitete bereits zusammen mit Madonna (Ray of Light), Prince, Peter Gabriel und Blur. Die zweite Version von 'Electrical Storm' findet sich übrigens auf der B-Seite der Limited Edition Ausgabe. The hands that built America (Best of 1990-2000/2002): Diese Version ist eine andere, bzw. wurde anders abgemischt, als das Snippet welches wir auf U2.com hören konnten (langgezogenes "America", Keyboard im Hintergrund). Vom Gesamteindruck her ein sehr ruhiger, stimmungsvoller Song, der aber einen kraftvollen mittleren Teil hat. Der Text ist eindeutig auf den Film "Gangs Of New York" abgestimmt, der das Thema irischer Auswanderer behandelt, welches sich auch im Song wiederfindet ("Oh my love, it's a long way we've come. From the freckled hills, to the steel and glass canyons...From the stony fields, to hanging steel from the sky. From digging in our pockets..."), gegen Ende des Songs ändert sich die Thematik, die dann den 11. September behandelt ("It's early fall, there's a cloud on the New York sky line. Innocence, dragged across a yellow line"). Im Hintergrund des zweiten Refrains sind Stimmen zu hören, aber schwer zu verstehen, meiner Meinung nach könnten es Ausschnitte aus dem Film sein, die reingemischt wurden. Etwas später, nach "Halle, Ole" wirkt Bonos Gesang sehr intensiv und verzerrt, aber nur kurz. Nicht nur wegen dem Titel, sondern auch vorallem der letzte Refrain ("Ahhhh America") hat mich an "This is not America" von David Bowie und Pat Metheny (übrigens auch aus einem Film-Soundtrack) erinnert. Wie schon gesagt, ein ruhiger Song, der durch Xylophon (!), Streicher, Keyboard-Piano und Akkustik-Gitarre eine sehr spezielle Stimmung erzeugt und nach mehrmaligem Hören seine volle Wirkung zeigt. (P)Review to the Best Of 1990-2000 in english As promised here is an english translation of our (p)review for the new U2-album 'The Best Of 1990-2000'. We wanted to leave the discussion about the selection of the tracks beside, we just wanted to concentrate on reviewing the tracks on the album. At the beginning are the songs which were not changed in lyrics and mix. These are the songs 'Even Better Than The Real Thing', 'One', 'Until The End Of The World' of the album 'Achtung Baby' from 1991. From Zooropa of the year 1993 are 'Stay (Faraway, So Close!)' and 'The First Time'. Further unchanged tracks like 'Beautiful Day' and 'Stuck In A Moment' from the album 'All That You Can't Leave Behind' (2000) have found their way on this compilation. But even these obviously unchanged tracks sound much better and more fresh now, the digital sound techniques improved a lot over the last 10 years! Infos: New Tracks (to date on no other release) Infos: Revised Tracks Here's a list of the revised tracks: Mysterious Ways (Achtung Baby/1991): The first song which has a slightly change is track Nr. 2 'Mysterious Ways'. Unremarkable the first time you listen to it, but here was a change of lyrics: At 1:35 min the line 'She's the wave, she turns the tide, she sees the man inside the child' has been changed to 'She's the wave, she'll turn the tide, and no question, she knows why.' Maybe this is a tribute to Edge’s and Morleigh’s wedding? After all, it's their song. Miss Sarajevo (Original Soundtracks 1/1995): The next obvious change is the lenght of this version of 'Miss Sarajevo'. This songs has been edited by about 90 seconds by cutting instrumental parts at 2:30 min and a faster fade out than in the original. So the song with its lenght of 04:32 min is about 90 sec shorter than the original version on the album. Gone (Pop/1997): The new version of this song is far more ‘trashy’ than the original. Bono’s guitar as well as Larry’s drums take much more room in the foreground and sound more closer, and intense. Remarkable is above all the great transparency of the recording. In comparison to the 1997 version the difference is obvious – one can suddenly hear instruments that before were hardly audible in the mix. And Bono’s guitar-retch comes across even better than in the song’s live version. The song is only slightly longer (8 seconds) than the version found on Pop. Discotheque (Pop/1997): Probably the song with the most changes compared to the original. With a nod to the live version of this song (as part of the regular set during the Popmart Tour, and occasionally played during the Elevation Tour) the recording is now clearer and its groove far more emphasised through the use of shaker-clicks, as well as Edge’s guitar. Also the song’s bridge is now far more dominant in the mix – whether this is due to Mike Hedges’ production or merely new studio technology (24 bit quality) is speculation. Completely new in this version are the intro as well as the end of the song. Thus the entire ‘boom-cha’ part towards the end of the song has now disappeared (shame, I always considered this the best part), as well as the ‘love’ bridges sung by Bono. As a result the song is now also shorter (04:42 min) than the original version. Staring at the Sun (Pop/1997): Another clearly reworked track, and again the arrangement shows influences of the song’s live version. Particularly Edge’s vocals have been moved into the foreground. Unfortunately, a new drum loop, which was probably intended to add a ‘cool touch’ to this new version, is rather irritating and makes the song a little dull. All in all this version reminds one of the remixes and b-sides of the Pop singles. With 04.49 min slightly longer than the original version. Numb (Zooropa/1993): Also this song features a number of changes. Most remarkably, though the lyrics, there is clearly a new background vocal in the chorus. Apart from the ‘Fat Lady’s’ (aka Bono) high-pitched but tender ‘I feel numb’ there is now another stronger and low ‘I feel numb’ added – on first listening we thought one of us was singing along, but it is indeed part of the new mix. Not a good idea, though, because the whole thing becomes rather repetitive and all in all is more annoying than enjoyable. There seem to be no other changes. And now some infos on the new songs: Electrical Storm (Best of 1990-2000/2002): A great song, with hit potential! But unlike most U2 songs the song’s appeal lies not in the guitar hooks but the sung melody. Also quite rare for a U2 song is the chorus’ guitar being played without delay. In return, the synthesiser parts are more clearly in the foreground. All in all very skilfully done, and a nice addition to the Best Of 1990-2000 album. The version of the song on the A-Sides CD of the limited edition of the album is a mix by William Orbit (who’s working credentials include Prince, Peter Gabriel, Blur and Madonna’s ‘Ray of Light’ album). The second, original version of the song can be found on the B-Sides CD of the limited edition album. The hands that built America (Best of 1990-2000/2002): This version is different, or at least differently mixed, from the one previously heard on U2.com. Judging from our first impression a very calm and atmospheric track with a powerful middle part. The song’s lyrics clearly point towards "Gangs of New York", which deals with Irish immigrants in the US: "Oh my love, it's a long way we've come. From the freckled hills, to the steel and glass canyons...From the stony fields, to hanging steel from the sky. From digging in our pockets..." Towards the end of the song the theme shifts towards September 11: "It's early fall, there's a cloud on the New York sky line. Innocence, dragged across a yellow line" In the background of the second chorus one can hear a dialogue, which may be taken from the film itself. The song reminds us of David Bowie's 'This is not America' by David Bowie and Pat Metheny (by the way, another film soundtrack), and is particularly convincing through its use of strings, piano and acoustic guitar.
