U2 Original Of The Species
Im November 2005 haben U2 in Nordamerika Original Of The Species als Promo-Single veröffentlicht. U2 haben diese Single-Version im Sommer in den niederländischen Wisseloord Studios mit einigen Streichern eingespielt. Kurz nach dem Promo-Release erschien ein Live-Video zu dem Song und ein Videoclip von Catherine Owens. Im Januar 2006 folgte ein weiteres Video von Mark Pellington. Im Frühjahr 2006 wurde 'Original Of The Species' auch in Europa als Promo-Single (Popup LinkCover) veröffentlicht.

Der Rückblick - U2's erstes Studio-Album seit 2000
Im Oktober 2000 wurde U2's letztes reguläres Studio-Album veröffentlicht: All That You Can't Leave Behind. Nachdem die darauf folgende Elevation Tour im Dezember 2001 endete, machte Bono wenige Tage später allen Fans Hoffnung, dass schon bald ein Nachfolgewerk auf den Markt kommen könnte: "There could be another album soon - we’re in the studio this week" (News)

Doch im Jahr 2002 machte dann zunächst ein Statement Schlagzeilen, das den Gerüchten von einer U2 Tour im Jahr 2002 klar und deutlich eine Absage erteilte (News). Und statt eines neuen Albums veröffentlichten U2 dann im Herbst ihr Best Of 1990-2000 samt DVD mit lediglich zwei neuen Songs und einigen neuen Mixes.

Im Januar 2003 bestätigte U2.com dann über ihren Newsletter, dass die Band zur Zeit an neuem Material für ein Album arbeitet. Zitat U2.com Newsletter: "The band will be in the studio in the coming weeks working on material for the next album." Allem Anschein nach planten U2, im Herbst 2003 das neue Album zu veröffentlichen. In verschiedenen Statements wurde das neue Material von den Bandmitgliedern bereits in den höchsten Tönen gelobt: Es handle sich um einfache, aber energiegeladene Songs: "It's like punk rock made on Venus. / It's just a very raw Rock'n'Roll album. / It's a guitar record." (siehe auch unten). In einem Interview von U2.com im Juni 2003 äußerte sich Paul McGuinness über den Stand der Dinge im Aufnahmestudio: "Ich habe einiges von dem neuen Material gehört, und sie haben im Moment so um die zwanzig neue Songs in Arbeit". Auch er beschrieb die Songs als "very rock and roll, very direct". Durch Bonos politische Aktivitäten gäbe es aber ab und an eine Pause. Wann das neue Album veröffentlicht wird, sei noch ungewiss: "Ich erinnere immer daran, dass wir von unseren Fehlern in der Vergangenheit lernen müssen, und es erst veröffentlichen sollten, wenn es auch wirklich fertig ist." Unterdessen wurde auch offiziell bestätigt, dass Chris Thomas (Produzent u.a. von Roxy Music, Sex Pistols, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Pretenders, INXS, Pulp) das neue U2 Album produzieren wird. Anstatt eines neuen Albums folgte im Herbst 2003 dann die von Fans herbei gesehnte Veröffentlichung der Live-DVD U2 Go Home - Live From Slane Castle, Ireland. Die Fans machten sich derweil Hoffnungen auf ein Album-Release im Frühjahr/Sommer 2004.

Doch stattdessen drangen Anfang 2004 beunruhigende Nachrichten aus dem Studio: Nachdem im Herbst bereits Daniel Lanois als Produzent im Studio ausgeholfen hatte (News), wurde im Februar 2004 auch Steve Lillywhite ins Studio beordert (News). Sind U2 mit Chris Thomas unzufrieden? Doch Paul McGuinness wiegelte ab und verwies auf einen natürlichen Produktionsprozess: "Es sind verschiedene Produzenten involviert bei diesem Album. Chris Thomas hat gute Arbeit gemacht. Es ist gut wieder mit Steve zu arbeiten, aber es ist nicht so, dass wir wieder von Neuem beginnen müssen." (News). Später folgte dann auch noch Jacknife Lee ins Studio (News), wahrscheinlich um sich an verschiedenen Remixes zu betätigen. In der Gerüchteküche wurde nun ein Veröffentlichungstermin im Herbst 2004 gehandelt (News). Paul McGuinness bestätigte dies, konnte sich aber auch ein Release im Frühjahr 2005 vorstellen (News). In den Monaten April, Mai und Juni 2004 hielten sich U2 dann aber wohl fast täglich im Studio auf, entweder in Dublin (News) oder in Südfrankreich (News). Außerdem fand in Portugal ein Photoshooting statt (News). Ende Juni konnten wir dann selbst direkt aus Dublin berichten (News). Im Juli 2004 haben U2 dann die Arbeiten zum neuen Album beendet (News). Kurz darauf wurde The Edge in Südfrankreich eine CD mit Demo-Aufnahmen für das neue Album entwendet (News). Mitte August 2004 sickerten dann erste konkrete Infos über die neue Single, das neue Album und die neue Tour durch (News). Ende August äußerte sich U2.com erstmals konkret zum neuen Album und bestätigte die Informationen (News). Kurz darauf folgte das Press Release zur neuen U2-Single 'Vertigo' (News). Am 13. September bestätigte U2.com schließlich den Titel des neuen U2-Albums: How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (News).

Bevor U2 ihr Album How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb veröffentlicht haben, gab es im Internet zahlreiche Gerüchte über einzelne Songtitel. Einige Titel haben U2 selbst in diversen Interviews genannt, andere beruhen auf Aussagen von Fans oder Meldungen von Zeitschriften.
