Kommentar

Der Sound ist im Gegensatz zum Wetter sehr gut. Bei den ersten Songs steht Anton Corbijn zum Fotographieren auf der Bühne. Bono beginnt 'Beautiful Day' mit "Schöne Menschen, Schöne Nacht, Schöner Tag" und zum Schluss von 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For' sagt er "Thanks for waiting in the rain, for singing in the rain, for dancing in the rain".

Konzertbericht von The Rock Radio

U2 rock 70,000 in Munich

Written by The Rock Radio staff, July 2005 © The Rock Radio

"Singin' in the Rain" (Gene Kelly), 'I Can't Stand The Rain' (Tina Turner) or simply 'Rain' (The Beatles) . It was pouring cats and dogs for hours in Munich but Bono being the number one showman in the biz did not cry for shelter but stepped right into the open.

Emptying a bottle of water over his head whilst entering the stage to the driving rhythm of The Arcade Fires 'Walk On', Bono demonstrated to the 70.000 soaking wet fans just one thing: I might be the frontman of U2, but tonight I am one of you, too. A simple trick that made all the difference.

Despite the weather circumstances, August 3, 2005 was a night to remember. Beating the heavy rain with his very own weapons, Bono used almost every rain song ever written to cheer up the crowd. "Vertigo" lines were changed from "And no one gets hurt" to "And no one gets...WET", the Beatles were not only featured with "Rain" but also with "Here Comes The Sun" as a message for hope. And even one of the most influential bands in pop and dance history had to give their share: With "Brown Girl in the Rain, Brown Girl in the Rain" Bono did a cheerful rendition of the Boney M classic.

From the raw power of "I Will Follow" and "The Electric Co." to the more sophisticated lyrics of "Miracle Drug" or "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" U2 delivered the best of the last 2 decades within 125 minutes.

U2 even played "Miss Sarajevo" - a song hardly played on the Vertigo World Tour - and dedicated the song to the recent victims of the bombings in London and Egypt. Following that, the German Fan Club u2-news.de had planned a nice audience participation for "Pride". Thousands of white balloons made their way into the Munich sky, taking Bono, The Edge, Larry Mullen J.r and Adam Clayton completely by surprise and prompting Bono to sign a few lines of the old Nena Classic "99 Luftballons".

For the encore Bono took a guy named Jurgen on stage, gave him a guitar and changed that part of the setlist from "Yaweh" to "Party Girl". Musically this was nothing to write home about but still Jurgen got his 15 minutes of fame and was even given a glass of champagne on stage!

But how do you end up a show in front of 70.000 people? A simple sing saying: "Bono, let's play Party Girl" did the trick! And closing the show again with 'Vertigo' Bono once more made a reference to the bad weather: "... thank you for waiting in the rain, thank you for singing in the rain, thank you for dancing in the rain ...".

It was pouring in Munich, but for U2 and the 70.000 strong crowd it was a mere "Beautiful Day".
