Wie die 'Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' in einer Pressemitteilung bestätigt hat, werden U2 bei der Oscar-Show den nominierten Titel-Song aus 'Gangs Of New York' (Best Song) The Hands That Built America live performen. Folgende Auftritte aus der Kategorie Best Song wurden neben U2 bis jetzt bestätigt: Paul Simon ('Father and Daughter') und Lila Downs and Caetano Veloso ('Burn it Blue'). Während noch unklar ist, ob sich Catherine Zeta-Jones und Renée Zellwegger ('I Move On') trauen einen Live-Auftritt vor Publikum zu bewältigen, hat Eminem ('Lose Yourself') seine Performance bereits gecancelt. Die Oscar-Show findet in der Nacht vom 23. auf den 24. März (Pre-Show ab 2:00 Uhr) statt, und wird live auf ProSieben übertragen. 'The Hands That Built America' wurde als bester Filmsong schon mit mehreren Preisen ausgezeichnet (Las Vegas Film Critics Society, Golden Globes und AOL Moviegoer Award) und mit der Oscar-Nominierung wurde jetzt für U2 ein weiterer Höhepunkt ihrer Karriere erreicht. This will be the band's first time performing on the Oscar show. U2 will perform "The Hands that Built America" from "Gangs of New York," for which the band's four members are nominated in the Original Song category. This is the first nomination for U2, which has been performing together since the late seventies.
